What is Print-On-Demand ?
"Not since the invention of the printing press, 500 years ago, has the world
stood on the threshold of such a dramatic change in the way information is
compiled, managed, and distributed...."
In the early 1990s, if you needed to print and bind a short run of books (1500 or less)
you would have to pay very close to the same total price for printing 1000 books or 5000 books.
Short runs were impractical, expensive, and
underestimations or overestimations of the printing run required. Book titles needed to
sell large quantities or they went out of print. Print runs in single figures, down to a
printing run of one book were next to impossible.
The Print On Demand (POD) revolution has changed the thinking behind short run printing.
The equipment for Print-On-Demand is changing and improving as rapidly as PC technology.
For several years, the quality of POD has matched the print and binding quality of
conventionally printed books. Because of this quality, many publishers and printers have
switched to POD for all of their smaller print runs.
One of the main arguments against POD is as follows:
"I need 1000 books. If I print a run of 5,000 conventionally,
the price-per-book is the same, or less, than the price-per-book printing 1000 POD."
The above statement is true, but publishers and authors need to start thinking outside of the
"price-per-book" box:
- Research by CAP Ventures shows that 90% of the cost of a printed page is spent prior
to the actual printing.
- How much extra are you paying for inventory space, insurance and management ?
- How much extra are you paying for overstocking the extra 4,000 books ?
- How much extra are you paying if you need to update your book ?
- How much extra are you paying if you find a mistake in your book ?
(40% of traditionally printed documentation is destroyed)
